WELCOME
Why do we need a Macomb County Swimming and Diving Blog?
With five divisions and 28 teams (in the MAC), it not possible for one person to keep up with the accomplishments of the athletes and the teams in Macomb County.
This brings up an additional point. I would like this blog to cover the teams that compete in Macomb County. Almost all of the Macomb County based swimming and diving teams compete in the MAC. Therefore, we will be covering some Oakland, Wayne and St Clair County teams as well. We also have De La Salle located in Macomb County, so we need to make sure they are included as well.
I am not trying strictly portray Macomb County Swimming and Diving from only my perspective. To that end, I am looking for contributors from all five Divisions and also from DLS. Even better would be a correspondent from each team that would post a recap of the previous weeks meets, outstanding practices or events.
I will also try to include links to sites that cover Macomb County and MAC sports and Athletes.

What a first night of Division competition for MAC Swimming.
Let's Start in the Red, where from a prediction standpoint it was a tough night.
Eisenhower proved to have too much depth for Romeo. Derek Raska, Devon Compeau, Tyler Laurain and Mike Elliott did what they were supposed to do for Romeo, but they could not overcome the Eisenhower Eagles, led by Alex Blanzy and Kevin Galerneau and Phil Hohnstadt. Alex, Kevin and Phil led a talented group of swimmers to a 99 - 81 win over Romeo.
GPS vs GPN - Well I got that one right. The point spread was just a little bigger than I thought. Both teams had some very fast swims and even some state cuts, but the performance of the night had to go to GPS's Jordan Long, 276.85 points in diving. Jordan is back on the board after being sick, and it looks like he may follow in his coaches footsteps. Only 58 days to the state finals! Final score GPS 133 - GPN 53

First week of MAC competition.
MAC Red -
GPN v GPS - Cross town rivals, great programs, should be a great meet. Both teams practice at the same pool (GPN), so it will be difficult for either team to suprise the other. GPS has an advantage in numbers, but never under estimate what veteran coach Mike O'Connor can do with his strong GPN team.
prediction GPS 103 - GPN 83
Eisenhower @ Romeo - The battle of NW Macomb County. Could this be a case of a past Macomb County powerhouse battling the current King of the County. Romeo has had only one daul meet so far, so they may still be trying to figure out what combinations will be the most effective. Eisenhower is 2 -1, and started the season with an impressive victory over Chippewa Valley. Eisenhowers combination of veterans and very talented young swimmers will make this a very exciting meet.
prediction Romeo 94- IKE 92 (if this meet were held 7 miles south - maybe a different outcome)
L'anse Creuse has a bye - nice chance to train and see how the other meets shake out.
MAC White -
Fraser @ Marysville - Fraser is coming off an impressive tie vs Chippewa Valley (impressive because Fraser swam without one of their best swimmers). Based on the current MAC rankings, Fraser would be a predominant favorite. But wait, this meet is at the Marysville pool (4 lanes only), and that means Fraser willnot be able to take advantage of their team depth.
prediction Fraser squeaks out a victory - in a low scoring meet
Dakota @ Chippewa Valley - This meet should be fun, and don't be fooled by Chippewa's slow start, they have had some big competition. Dakota has been on a roll since their coming out party last year, knocking of Romeo, and they have not stopped winning. Both teams have talent, and depth.
prediction - Chippewa will keep it close, but look for Dakota to keep rolling.
Anchor Bay has a bye - but keep an eye on the Tars.
MAC Blue -
SouthLake @ St. Clair - St. Clair drives south, on west bound 94, and goes home with a victory.
Henry Ford II @ Stevenson (@ the HF II Pool) - Henry Ford has shown to much depth in the early meets to be beaten.
prediction - HF II will follow Bill Woods to victory
Roseville @ Utica - This is a tough meet to call. If the meet is at the Utica pool, the edge goes to Utica. If the meet is at the IKE pool, it could be a toss up.

WWT @ Lakeshore - Lakeshore and WWT are both of to good starts.

L'Anse Cruese North @ Cousino - This should be a good meet with two veteran coaches preparing their teams well. This year LCN just has too much talent and depth.

Swimming is an exciting fast paced sport. But it helps if you understand how a meet is set up and scored, and also the top goals for the teams and individuals competing.
What makes high school swimming one of the most exciting and objective sports on the scene? The clock. everyone races against the same clock. A horn sounds to start the race and 8 swimmers explode into the water, each trying to be the first to hit the wall and finish the race. So, the guy who got to the wall first is the winner? Sure. Does that mean that the second, third, fourth or even the eighth place swimmers is a 'loser'? Not necessarily. Each swimmer is racing against the clock, so if a swimmer improves his time, even if he does not take first place, that swimmer has improved! Think about that concept for a moment. What are we trying to teach our student/athletes? Hard work, dedication, and continuous improvement; these are the things that lead to success. Not just in the pool, but in academics, and in life. In high school swimming, even a teams 'B', 'C' or 'D' swimmers can be the star of a meet with a breakout performance in their individual event or a great 'split' in a relay.
So lets look at a typical dual meet. Two teams, 12 events, and up to five places scoring points per event.
The events in a swim meet are laid out as follows:
200 yd Medley Relay (4x50 yds - Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle)
200 yd Freestyle
200 yd Individual Medley (4x50 yds - Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle)
50 yd Freestyle
1 meter Diving (6 dives)
100 yd Butterfly
100 yd Freestyle
500 yd Freestyle
200 yd Freestyle Relay (4x50 yds)
100 yd Backstroke
100 yd Breaststroke
400 yd Freestyle Relay (4x100 yds)
Each team is allowed to enter 3 swimmers to compete for points in individual events, and 2 teams to compete for points in the three relay events.
Points are awarded as follows:
Individual Events:
First place - 6 pts
Second place 4 pts
Third place - 3 pts
Fourth place - 2 pts
Fifth place -1 pt
Relay Events:
First place - 8 pts
Second place - 4 pts
Third place - 2 pts
There are a total of 16 points for each individual event, and 14 points for relays. The total points available in a dual meet - 186. The first team to 84 wins.
In Championship Meets, the events stay the same (except diving, which has 11 dives), but the scoring is increased to 12 or 16 places.
Macomb County Championships and the State Finals Meets score 16 places.
MAC Division Championship Meets score 12 places.
Dual meets are usually held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1 hour 15 mins - 1 hour 30 mins).
Championship Meets are held on Fridays and Saturdays (2 - 3 hours).
